What Is Computer Vision, And Why It Matters

Think of Computer vision as the technology that enables a computer to see the world as we do. 

Computer vision is an Artificial Intelligence field that focuses on enabling computers to interpret and understand visual data from the world, such as images, recorded or even live videos. For example you can train a computer to look at thousands of pictures of a city after a hurricane hit it, and it will be able to determine which areas are the most damaged, and therefore where the most urgent help is needed.

With the help of a diagnosis software, your doctor won’t miss critical information and make better judgement calls.

For example, have you ever bought a malfunctioning tool? You got out of the store, go to your house and want to fix that gnashing door only to find out the tip of the hammer is loose and you have to get back to the store but you of course don’t want to drive 20 min and ask for a change. Computer Vision will enable the factory to quickly remove all the tools that didn’t pass a visual quality test.

Self-driving cars rely on computer vision to interpret and understand the environment around them in order to make driving decisions, while drones use computer vision to navigate and avoid obstacles.

This is probably the best example of the power of Computer Vision. And also the more “visual”, as we constantly see news about self-driving cars. If you ever question how these cars are made, computer vision is the answer.
