Michael is the Remotasks platform’s June 2021 Remotasks Rockstar, and it’s a typical image for Michael to portray the family man. As expected, Michael likes making trips to the grocery in the mornings, checking the store his mother manages, and spending time with his family. But once he logs out of work, his mind goes straight into online games.
Ever since 1997, Michael, or his in-game name "Kyusin," would always have his eyes glued to the latest in gaming. Kyusin always made a presence in Ragnarok Online Philippines and Yulgang - and more recently, Path of Exile, Call of Duty Warfare, and even Genshin Impact.
"I consider games as my stress reliever," Michael said. "And I play with my friends and family in mobile [games] - with my brother, sister, and even my grandson!"
And perhaps taking from his experiences in online games, Michael would always take the time to help fellow Remotaskers whenever they had trouble at work. This online gaming MVP became a real champ for Remotaskers out there, earning him the spot of June 2021's Most Outstanding Remotasker (#MORE).
For an online game lover like Michael, one would be surprised that he's actually quite the busy bee. It's precisely because of his schedule that he cherishes his time playing online games - even before Remotasks.
"Even before then, I'm a former employee of a data corporation way back in 2007," Michael started. He added that he often envied other colleagues for their talent, being able to achieve incredible words per minute. But Michael isn't one to be left behind.
"I work hard and I make sure I land great reviews with every project I handle," he said. "And as I discovered more working platforms, I asked myself if there's a way to get the kind of job I had but to work from home and enjoy my daily life."
Fast forward a couple of years, and it's 2019. Michael was managing a business then, and had his mother help him look after a store. And even then, Michael explained, he was a direct seller. He sold make-up and other products to both guys and gals. This was around the time his brother introduced him to Remotasks.
"I had to step aside since this was still at the peak of our operations," he said.
His vision of a dream job came to life when the pandemic hit. This was around the time Michael decided to "go for it" in terms of trying Remotasks.
"I started to think if Remotasks is the same as my previous work, but I hoped it's not like customer service because I'm weak in English," Michael said. "And when I got used to Remotasks, I loved that it's a friendly platform with access to all the things I need should I encounter trouble with tasks."
Since starting in Remotasks, Michael got himself in all kinds of groups through the months. Starting with some tasks in Remotasks University, Michael's experience with 2D Tasks led him to train in more projects within the platform's Training Center.
It was around mid-2020 that Michael tried the platform's Online Bootcamp platform - courtesy of an invitation. This experience introduced him to more peers, more teams, and a live Trainer who showed them the ropes in more difficult projects. And this was around the time that Michael became part of the MODQA Team (Moderators), and got shuffled into various projects.
But just because he's doing a lot of work doesn't mean Michael is forgetting about his home life.
"I do full time here on Remotasks and allot a bit of time to the family business," Michael said. "I schedule a few hours every Monday for my business and I allot the rest of my hours in Remotasks. Aside from doing Remotasks, I make sure that I do house stuff like going to the grocery to buy our needs before even proceeding to do tasks. I also allot time to pay bills and visit the family store..
When asked about his favorite part of the platform, Michael immediately pointed towards the Remotasks Community.
"The best part of Remotasks is meeting a lot of people and making new friends - even some of them are humble and crazy fun to be with," he joked. "Even in terms of projects, you can ask for help from such a huge community - and you can even help them and guide them to do good work."
Michael looked back at the times he's responded to someone's call for assistance. "It's touching knowing that I've helped someone in the community, since this was also the case back when I was new. Anyone can just chat with each other with their questions, and people who know will answer back."
As a Remotasker, Michael managed to spare extra time to help Remotaskers seeking assistance through Slack and Discord - on both public and private channels.
"If I know the tasks, I give some details, some opinions, and some details that I can share," Michael explained. "I know that people can learn quickly, there's a ton of time to learn new things."
And for Michael, both the Remotasker and customers remain the priority at work.
"Remember – as Taskers, we don’t just want our scores to be high, we want customers to be satisfied with our results."
In the Philippines, there's an old adage "Bahala na si Batman" (It's up to Batman) which is the Filipino equivalent of "Whatever will be, will be." And it's an attitude that Michael doesn't want his fellow Remotaskers to adopt, especially when doing tasks.
"We can't just rely on 'Bahala na si Batman' when we don't know something," Michael said. "If we don't know what a task needs us to do, we should ask others for help - and this is something I always tell others. When I'm familiar with the task, I help others - even if I don't know them.
"What I like about our communications channels is that they give me a means to help Remotaskers avoid a hard time. I don't want Remotaskers to experience mistakes if I can teach them right away."
